CAD Computer Aided Design

The entire CNC manufacturing process starts with Computer Aided Design software. Most people interested in CNC manufacturing have a background in 2D or 3D design. This tutorial will discuss the most basic CAD operation knowledge to create geometry that can be passed forward into the CAM software.

Creating CAD Geometry

The very simplest way to start is to create a blank file in a CAD program. It can be as simple as a triangle, circle, or square.

Choosing a CAD Program

CNC tool paths can be developed in both 2D and 3D CAD programs. Here are a few options for CAD programs both free and paid for.

  • AutoDesk AutoCAD Current – Trial Version is Free (CAD Only)
  • AutoDesk AutoCAD old versions- Inexpensive older versions can be found on line (CAD Only)
  • AutoDesk Fusion 360 – Free license if you make less than $100,000 per year using the software (CAD & CAM)
  • FreeCAD – Open-source software that is free (CAD & CAM)

Tutorials in this blog will utilize AutoCAD 2007 and a paid subscription version of Fusion 360.
